Getting to NASA Ames and Asilomar

If you plan on attending the Sunday field trip, you should arrive in the Bay Area Saturday afternoon (October 8) and go to NASA Ames (see vicinity maps). The closest airport is San Jose International Airport (SJC), 15 minutes from Ames by taxi (about $30 fare). If you fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO), taxi to NASA Ames will be about $70. Public transportation (BART/Cal Train) from SFO is available at very low cost. Take the Bart train to the Millbrae stop, then transfer to Cal Train southbound and exit at the Mountain View stop. BART runs about every 10 minutes and the Cal Train schedule and fares are available at: http://www.caltrain.com/schedule.html. We will provide van service between Cal Train Mountain View and NASA Ames from 3 PM to 7 PM Saturday (see vicinity map 2). If you will be arriving earlier or later than this we suggest you take a taxi from the Mountain View train station to Ames.

Once at Ames, you must present photo id at the gate, then notify the guard you are staying at the NASA Lodge (view map). If, when you registered, you requested Ames lodging for Saturday night, a room reservation will be waiting under your name. You must pay for the room upon arrival on Saturday (All major credit cards are accepted. VISA, AMEX, DISCOVER, MASTERCARD). Cancellations must be phoned in 3 weeks in advance (650-603-7100) or the conference may be charged for the unused room. If you are delayed en route and will not arrive until Sunday or later, please phone Ames to cancel the room.

We will provide simple food and host a mixer at Ames Saturday night, and early morning coffee and pastries for those attending the field trip. Alternatively, Mountain View is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive from Ames and there are many restaurants there. If you plan on eating in Mountain View, there are many good restaurants on Castro Street (http://www.mountainviewca.net/ ).

The field trip will depart Ames at 8 am, arriving Asilomar around 4:30 in the afternoon. Box lunch will be provided. Luggage will be transported separately along with any participants who prefer to proceed directly to Asilomar Saturday morning.
