Outlook Express Installation Guide

(detailed instructions)

To setup Outlook Express you will need to:

  1. Open Outlook Express.

  2. If the Internet Connection Wizard appears asking for your Display Name, then skip to step 4. Otherwise, open the Tools menu and choose Accounts...

  3. Click the Add button and select Mail...

  4. Enter your full name as you would like it to be displayed on messages you send.

  5. Enter your E-mail address, likely of the form FirstName.LastName@oregonstate.edu. Click Next.

  6. Select the type of incoming Mail server. Select IMAP from the pulldown menu.

  7. The Incoming mail server (IMAP) name is exmail.oregonstate.edu

  8. The Outgoing mail server (SMTP) name is exmail.oregonstate.edu, then click Next.

  9. For the Account name - use your e-mail address (first.last@oregonstate.edu).

  10. Enter your Password.

  11. Optional: Check Remember Password. Click Next.

  12. Click Finish.

  13. You'll be asked if you want to download folders from the mail server you added. Choose No.

  14. Go to Tools | Accounts... and click on the "Directory Service" tab.

  15. Click the Add button and select Directory Service...

  16. Enter directory.oregonstate.edu as the Internet directory (LDAP) server. Click Next.

  17. Make sure Yes is checked. Click Next.

  18. Click Finish.

  19. Select directory.oregonstate.edu in your Internet Accounts List window and click the Properties button to the right.

  20. Under the Properties window, select the Advanced tab.

  21. Click in the Search Base textbox and type in: o=orst.edu

  22. Click the OK Button.

  23. Click on the Mail tab and click on exmail.oregonstate.edu in your Folder List window. Choose Properties.

  24. Select the Servers tab.

  25. In the Outgoing Mail Server section, check the box indicating My server requires authentication.

  26. Click Settings.

  27. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK.

  28. Select the Advanced tab.

  29. Check both boxes indicating This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

  30. Click OK.

  31. For each of the folders now listed under exmail.oregonstate.edu, you can do the following:
    • Right-click on the folder to select it
    • Click the Synchronization Settings dropdown
    • Select Headers Only

Making this setting change helps response time. Only the headers will be downloaded by default. At the time you select a message to view, then the entire message will be downloaded. (Rather than ALL of your messages being downloaded in their entirety by default every time you check your mail.)

  32. If you need to access a folder that you don't see, then right-click on exmail.oregonstate.edu and choose IMAP Folders... Highlight the folder you want and then click the Show button.

  33. The installation in now complete.
