Wireless Network
Quick links:
The OSU Public Network allows OSU Students, Faculty and Staff to connect
their personally-owned laptop computers to the OSU backbone for Internet
and e-mail access in a limited number of locations. Current OSU Students,
Faculty, Staff, Emeritus and Associates who have an ONID account can
connect to the OSU Public Network
Currently all parts of the Peavy/Richardson complex are covered with wireless network.
If you notice that the signal is absent in some parts of the building, please
contact Forestry Computing Helpdesk in PVY 222.
- A laptop computer running Windows (98, ME, 2000 or XP), Mac OS 9.x or
10.x (English versions only).
- An internal WI-FI 802.11b compliant Wireless LAN Card or a PCMCIA Wireless
LAN Card.
- Your Ethernet port's Hardware address.
For tips on how to get your laptop's wireless address and configure
your laptop for wireless visit here
- OSU_PUB, the wireless network supported by TRF, will give you access
to the Internet and University resources such as the library databases.
- Those with Forestry Computing accounts may want to access network
disk space. Sometime in the next few months Forestry computing resources
will move behind a firewall. Before the firewall is implemented you will
be able to map a drive from OSU_PUB to your Forestry network disk space.
After firewall implementation you will need to use SSH or similar secure
FTP client to transfer files between your machine and your Forestry network
disk space.
- NOTE: You will only have access to Forestry software licenses and printing
services if you choose to pay Forestry computing support fees for your
computer.
If you will be using Wireless you can register your laptop anywhere,
where OSU_PUB network is available.
To register your computer on the network:
- Turn on and log into your laptop
- Connect to SOU_PUB and open your preferred web browser
Your web browser will be automatically redirected to the OSU Public Network
Authentication Page
We highly recommend that you choose the link to register for PERMANENT
access to the network instead of logging in for TEMPORARY access. NOTE:
If you are using a Public Data Port in the Library and do not see the
option for temporary login please skip to the next step.
-
Enter your ONID ID and Password
o If you have not set up your ONID account please follow the link to
do so. Note that this may add an additional 10-15 minutes to the registration
process.
- Read and accept the Acceptable Use Policy
- Enter the Hardware Address for your computer
- Select "Wired" if you will be using the Public Data Ports
- Select "Wireless" if you will be using a wireless connection.
- Click on Ok.
- Wait approximately 10 minutes for your registration information to be
processed and authorized.
- Congratulations! You are now able to use the OSU Public Network!
If you are having problems, you can find troubleshooting tips here or

Supported by student Technology Resource Fees, you will find wireless network
access points in all parts of Peavy, Richardson, and College of Forestry spaces
in the Oak Creek Building. We hope to bring wireless coverage to the College
of Forestry spaces in the FSL in the next six months.
