Quantitative Sciences Group Service Center Fees

Explanation of Fees (see fees below)

(Additional information and policy details at: /helpdesk/policies/)

  1. UNIX fees are a flat fee (public accounts $56/mo, private machines $408/mo with backups, $204/mo without backups) based on a full recovery of the costs to maintain and operate the UNIX network.

  2. Fully Supported User fees are a flat fee ($125/user/month) based on a full recovery of the costs to maintain network services with helpdesk support for user and machine issues.

    Services include:
    • rapid assistance with problems related to hardware, software and network
    • queued assistance and follow-up with larger hardware, software and network problems
    • checkout equipment
    • support for classroom equipment
    • support for workshops
    • shared printing support
    • e-mail
    • 45 network servers (including Web and database servers)
    • network disk space
    • network backup and recovery
    • a secure and reliable network
    • network wiring infrastructure - Internet access and wireless access - 100BASE-TX service to virtually everyone and gigabit Ethernet for most interconnections, servers, and many desktops
    • full coverage access to the campus public wireless network
    • management of operating system patches and software patches
    • general network security
    • software licenses (MS Office, Symantec Anti-Virus, …)
    • hardware and software – purchase, setup, configuration & troubleshooting

  3. Extended Partner Fee is a flat fee based on a full recovery of the basic helpdesk costs in #2 plus the additional costs of specialized quantitative support staff.  Access to extended helpdesk is available on a research-group basis only (not on a per-person basis). Extended Helpdesk gives covered users access to basic helpdesk support plus additional quantitative science support.

  4. Network account only fees are a flat fee ($37/account/month)  based on a full recovery of the costs to maintain and administer the PC workstation network.

    Services include:
    • e-mail
    • software licenses (MS Office, …)
    • 45 network servers (including Web and database servers)
    • network disk space
    • network backup and recovery
    • a secure and reliable network

  5. The Networked Machine fees are a flat fee ($43/machine/month) based on a full recovery of the costs of maintaining and supporting machines attached to the PC workstation network.

    Services include:

    • network wiring infrastructure - Internet access and wireless access - 100BASE-TX service to virtually everyone and gigabit Ethernet for most interconnections, servers, and many desktops
    • full coverage access to the campus public wireless network
    • management of operating system patches and software patches
    • general network security
    • software licenses (Symantec Anti-Virus, …)
    • hardware and software – purchase, setup, configuration & troubleshooting

  6. The hourly consulting fee is applied when requested technical assistance goes beyond the basic level of support covered by Helpdesk and machine support fees.

  7. Users who are not supported, i.e., who do not pay Helpdesk fees, can attend computing workshops on a space available basis for $20 per instruction hour.

  8. Users of handheld devices are not required to have their handheld devices supported. Those choosing handheld support will be charged the handheld support fee to recover costs of limited staff support time for this specialized peripheral.

  9. Any non-workstation device attached to the network is charged the networked device fee. Devices affected by this policy are non-public networked printers, multifunction devices, handhelds/PDAs, and instruments that require an IP address.

  10. The plotter printing fee covers the purchase of paper, ink, maintenance, replacement of the plotter on a five year rotation, and employee time to troubleshoot and support plotter use.

  11. The specialized software fee is prorated based on the actual cost of the software and the number of authorized users, if software is purchased as a shared license. Otherwise, cost is actual cost of the individual license.

  12. Extended network disk space and backup services have two associated costs -- data backup and server disk space. Those over quota and not on private servers will be charged for disk space and backup. Current quotas are:

    • User home directory quota - 11GB (single user access)
    • Group/Project shared directories - 20GB (multiple user access)

  13. Database and Web hosting incurs a fee in cases where the databases or web sites utilize resources beyond those provided as part of the basic services supported by machine fees and network access fees.  This service is for a minimum of one year and may be renewed annually. Charges are pro-rated to complete the fiscal year of service start and then, subsequent years, billed annually during the first quarter of each fiscal year.

The fee schedule for FY 2010 is listed below.  A copy of the current fee schedule can be obtained by contacting the Director of Computing or the College of Forestry Helpdesk after July 1, 2009.

Extended Network Disk Space Backup Fees

A. Disk Space and Admin

  • Standard, high-performance, server space: $4.00/GB/year

B. Data Backup and Admin

  • $.45/GB/year for backup media
  • $.05/GB/year for admin and infrastructure support (basic infrastructure costs are covered in basic services fees)
  • This total of $.50/GB/year is an annual charge which is then multiplied by a number that depends on the choice of backup schedule shown below.

    1. Current - Monthly baseline, nightly incrementals, 6-month retention
-- 11 unit multiplier for multiple cycles of media needed for retention.
    2. Quarterly retention - Monthly baseline, nightly incrementals, 3-month retention
-- 6 unit multiplier for multiple cycles of media needed for retention.
    3. Negotiated, special needs baseline backup with scheduled backup intervals - $.50/GB/each backup + $120 admin annually (admin fee required because non-standard backups require additional admin time for setup, scheduling, and management of tapes not in the standard backup groups).
      * at least 1 backup per year required
      * maximum 2 yr retention

C. Private Server Admin - $43/month (+$100 annual fee if on backup)

  • Those who purchase private servers will be charged B and C (backup and private server admin) but will be providing their own extended disk space, A.
  • FCR system administration ($43/month) is required on all private servers on the Forestry network in order to minimize system incompatibilities and security problems. Private servers are also required to be on manufacturer's maintenance.
  • If the private server will be backed up, an additional $100 annual fee covers the backup client license and annual backup software and hardware maintenance required to backup an additional machine.
  • The server must have a current hardware maintenance contract to remain under the administration of FCR. Typically, the first 3 years of hardware maintenance are covered in the initial purchase of the hardware. Annual hardware maintenance fees beyond the initial contract are the responsibility of the project.
