Handheld Computer Policy

Background

The Forestry Computing Resources policy, as outlined below, is to treat a handheld computer (Palm, PocketPC) as a peripheral of a supported workstation. Handheld users are not required to have their handheld devices supported. Those choosing handheld support will be charged the handheld support fee ($5/month - Palm OS, $12.50/month - Pocket PC) to recover costs of limited staff support time for this specialized peripheral. Support is provided to help users get set up but Forestry Computing Resources time or expertise is not available to solve all the problems that a user may encounter.

Policy

  1. Assistance is provided in the specification and purchase of handheld devices.

  2. Support is limited to attempts to answer basic questions about handheld use (PalmOS and PPC only) and perhaps to provide some instruction.

  3. Assistance is provided in resolving questions that may come up during installation of the basic handheld communication software on a user's Forestry Computing Resources supported workstation.

  4. Assistance is provided in resolving synchronization problems with the Forestry Exchange mail system database but not with other data stores or remote communication systems.

  5. Forestry Computing Resources is not responsible for software or information on the handheld devices themselves. Users are responsible for their own backups and it is expected that users should be able to restore a recent image of the system should problems develop.
