Visiting Scholars Computing Support Options

  • NOTE: Visitors operating on the OSU “public” wireless network DO NOT have access to OSU resources such as the OSU restricted library resources, Forestry printers, and Forestry licensed software.

Visitors here for a day or two

  • Sponsoring faculty member utilizes their personal ONID account to grant the visitor’s wireless laptop temporary (24 hour) access to the OSU “public” wireless network.

    • Sponsoring faculty member/ONID user obviously takes responsibility for the registered guest device and any problems it may introduce on the network.

Visitors here for 2 weeks or less

  • Helpdesk can setup the visitor with a guest network account on the Forestry network (no cost)
    • The visitor can utilize any public lab/workstation
    • This option offers FULL SUPPORT (Helpdesk, software access, public printing, …)

  • We can now isolate guest computers to internet access only without exposing the Forestry or OSU network to possible security risks. Therefore, wireless internet-only access for a visitor’s laptop computer for a period of two weeks or less can be arranged through the Helpdesk at no cost.

  • A sponsor for a conference, hosting multiple visitors, can pay $50 and all conference attendees with wireless laptops will have access to the OSU “public” wireless network for a period not to exceed two weeks. Application form: https://secure.oregonstate.edu/wifi/conf
    • Subject to availability, similar two-week wireless access to the Forestry network can be arranged through the Helpdesk at no cost, but access would be available in ONLY ONE location in Peavy/Richardson.

Visitors here for more than 2 weeks but less than 1 year

  • Visitor or sponsor pays Helpdesk and Network Account fees (prorated by day) Helpdesk provides a loaner desktop computer (no longer than 1 year).
    • This option offers FULL SUPPORT (Helpdesk, software access, public printing, …)

  • Visitor arrives with their own laptop (English or foreign language OS)
    • FCR charges a minimum of one hour of consulting ($60/hr) to check out the workstation and make sure it is set to receive Windows patches and has an active antivirus client which is receiving regular updates.
      • In the case of foreign language operating systems, we may have to settle for the user’s assurance that the patch and antivirus services are functioning.
      • The minimum $60 fee also recognizes that visitors here for an extended period of time will invariably utilize some degree of Helpdesk services.
      • If the visitor has an OSU ID and ONID account, the Helpdesk can grant their ONID account access to shared file space and department or unit supported shared printers.
    • Once the laptop/workstation meets the patch and antivirus conditions, it is added to the OSU “public” wireless network for a period not to exceed 1 year.
      • Visitors with an ONID account will register their laptops on the OSU "public" wireless network using their personal ONID account.

  • Visitor arrives with their own laptop (English or foreign language OS) but is located outside of OSU “public” wireless coverage.
    • FCR charges a minimum of one hour of consulting ($60/hr) to provide wired or wireless (whichever is most feasible with least cost) internet-only access for a period not to exceed one year.

  • A visitor arriving with their own laptop (must be English language OS) may choose to put their laptop on full support (FY08 fee - $40/mo). The laptop would be added to the Forestry network for the duration of their visit and any network related policies and software would be removed before the visitor’s departure. To qualify for full support the visitor or sponsor must also pay the Helpdesk and Network Account fees and the laptop must be on the network for a minimum of three months or pay an additional one hour consulting fee. All other fees are prorated by day.

Visitors here for more than 1 year are expected to negotiate financial arrangements for full support options through the sponsoring department or make a special appeal to the Forestry Computing Committee.
