How to Setup Spam Assassin in Outlook
Currently, OSU doesn't block any email that Spam Assassin believes is spam. It only flags the email. Outlook can be set to move the suspected spam out of your inbox and into a "junk" folder or you can automatically delete it. The advantage of the "junk" folder is that you can keep an eye on what Spam Assassin determines is spam.
To perform some action (move it or automatically delete it), you need to take the following steps in Microsoft Outlook:
- Right-click on your "Inbox" and choose "New Folder". Name it "junk". (Don't do this step if you want to automatically delete mail identified as spam)
- Click Tools then Rules Wizard. The Rules Wizard dialog box should pop up. Click New.
- For Office XP users, you'll see a choice at the top of the Rules Wizard Dialog box. Choose "Start from a blank rule".
- Choose "Check Messages When they Arrive" and click Next.
- In the "Which Condition(s) do you want to check?" section, checkmark the box for "With specific words in the message header".
- In the "Rule Description" section below, click the specific words link and enter the following: X-Spam-Flag: YES. (For Office XP users, click on the Add button.)
- Click OK. Click Next.
- Under "What do you want to do with the message?" checkmark the box "move it to the specified folder". (Or checkmark the box "Delete it" and skip to the last step if you want to automatically delete the suspected spam)
- In the "Rule Description" section below, click the specified link and choose the folder you created in step #1. Click OK.
- Click "Finish" then OK. Your rule should now be setup. DO NOT CLICK NEXT.
