How to Burn a Data CD

*Using Roxio Easy CD Creator


To open the CD burner software go to Start | Programs | Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 | Project Selector.

If it is the first time you have used the software, you will get the following message box:


Select “I accept the terms in the license agreement” and click OK.

The next box will also appear only the first time you access the software:

Select the “Don’t show me again” option and click OK.

This is the last “first-time only” box (below):

Select the “Do not show this reminder again” option and click “Remind me later”.

Now you are at the project selection window:

Roll your mouse pointer over the “make a data CD” selection and click on the “dataCD project” option.

This will bring you to the main window where you can choose which files you would like to put on the CD:


Now you can begin to create your CD. In the upper left hand corner you can select the source files. Click on the down arrow to get a list of the network drives. You can then select the appropriate folder (usually your N: or C: drive).

All of the subfolders will appear in the main window on the top half of the screen. From here you can navigate to the files you would like to copy onto CD.

To choose the files or folders that will be put on the CD, highlight the file and click the “Add” icon in the middle of the screen. This should move the files to the bottom half of the screen, preparing the CD.

If you would like, you may create folders on the CD to organize your files. To create a folder, right-click in the blank space on the bottom-left part of the screen (seen below). After you right-click, drag your mouse over the “New” selection and choose “Folder” from the drop down menu. You then name the folder.


If you would like to place files in the folder, double-click to open the folder. This will display the folder contents in the lower window. Then highlight the correct file and click the “Add” icon.

You can also change the name of your CD. To do this, right-click on the default name in the bottom-left part of the screen (usually a series of numbers) and go to rename. Then type what you would like to name the CD and hit Enter.

Note: The estimated free space on the CD is displayed on the bottom of the screen so you know how much room you have.

When you are finished placing the files on the CD, it is time to burn them.

Don’t forget to place the CD in the CD burner!

To complete the burn, click on the red “Record” icon in the middle of the screen. It will bring up the Record CD Setup window (seen below). If this window is not expanded, click on the Options button in the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen.


The CD-RW drive and Write Speed should already be automatically selected. Be sure to check the “Finalize CD” selection or your disc will not be usable in every computer (this does close the CD so you may not make changes to it).

If you do want to be able to add or remove things from the CD, click the “Finalize Session. Don’t Finalize CD” selection. This will allow you to make changes to the CD later, but it will only be usable on the computer that you used to create the CD.

After the settings are selected, click Start Recording. A window will pop up tracking the progress of the CD and will alert you when the recording is finished.

Your CD is successfully created!
