2005 Food for Thought Lecture Series

A lecture series addressing issues in biotechnology

The 2005 Food for Thought Lecture Series will host nationally recognized experts to speak on the benefits and risks of biotechnology. Each speaker will provide two lectures; one geared towards the general public, and a second more scientifically focused lecture for the OSU scientific community. The lecture schedules and information on each of the upcoming speakers can be found below.

All lectures are free of charge. Public lectures will be held at the LaSells Stewart Center from 7-9 pm.

The Food for Thought Lecture Series is sponsored by Oregon State University with funding from the Wait and Lois Rising Lectureship Fund, the Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing, the Linus Pauling Institute and the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry.

Dr. Ingo Potrykus

Dr. Potrykus and his coworkers in Europe developed a new kind of genetically engineered rice with a golden hue. It contains beta-carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A, which may be capable of relieving disease and blindness in millions of impoverished children in the developing world. This technical and humanitarian feat of biotechnology has, however, been derided by some major environmental organizations, and the stringent regulation on testing and trade in genetically engineered food has impeded research and commercial production. Dr. Potrykus will describe the basic science of how golden rice was created, how it has been received in Europe and the developing world, and the personal and political battles he has faced during its development.

Public lecture: Golden Rice: Humanitarian vision and political roadblocks
