Research Interests :

Modeling soil carbon fluxes across space and time
Linking above and belowground processes to climate, landscape and land use patterns

Research Statement:

Much of my research deals with the causes and quantification of spatial and temporal variation of soil respiration. Because soil respiration is the summed components of carbon dioxide release from autotrophic and heterotrophic metabolism, each of which can be strongly governed by soil climate, soil biological processes, and land use history, understanding how these drive the production of soil CO2 and how they are arranged on the landscape can significantly aid modeling efforts. Many inter-system trends have been observed and documented but little is known about how these patterns might occur at various scales through space and time. The development of models that incorporate spatially and temporally dynamic variables help us explore the effects of environmental changes on annual soil carbon flux, and ultimately the role of forests in global carbon cycling.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy every silent sport imaginable but I‘m currently focusing my efforts on finishing an ultra-marathon (yeah that’s right, quit laughing), getting on top of the peaks of the Cascades... maybe a little fishing too, AND enjoying my time with Erika and the dog.

Hard at work
